The Uses of Sorrow (In my sleep I dreamed this poem) Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift. –Mary Oliver This is a survivorship story, so I should begin with the beginning; people always want to know how I entered into the world of the brain damaged. Late one evening, in a nightclub in Biloxi, Mississippi three gangsters were assaulting a homosexual man in the bathroom. I interfered, the gay guy ran away, and the gangsters rained down their retribution. It is a blessed gift that I have no memory from that period of time. When I emerged from the coma, confused and tentative, I was a new person. I learned to talk, and then walk again on my own, and eventually fell back into my old job, my old narrative.
